Splitting blackjack hands is a common practice for many players when they get hands that they are allowed to split. The split requires you to increase your bet as each newly created blackjack hand requires its own wager.

Each blackjack variant offers its own set of rules with regards to splitting hands. In general the option to split is only given as an initial move once the hand is dealt. For example you will not be able to hit and then split.

Blackjack Split Rules

Below is a list of every possible split that is allowed in different blackjack variants. We always recommend checking the rules of the type of blackjack you are about to play so you know in advance which splits are allowed and which are not.

Splitting tens – Jacks, queens, kings and 10’s are all valued as ten points, most online casinos will allow you to split them on most blackjack variant, however in some games the cards need not just be of the same value but also of the same rank such as a pair of kings or a pair of 10’s but not splitting king and 10.

Resplitting – Allows to split a pair, usually no more than three times in one hand, although there are some variants that allow only one split, six splits or unlimited splits. For example: resplit a pair of 8’s, then split them and get another 8 as the second card for one of the split hands. Again you have a pair of 8’s and can split that. Each time matching the original bet you made for the hand.

Resplitting Aces – A rare rule that tends to only be used in Late Surrender games.

Additional Draw after Splitting Aces – In most cases after splitting aces you are allowed to only draw one card for each ace. In some variants this limitation is lifted and you can keep drawing.

No Aces Split – A rare rule that does not allow splitting aces in any case. If you are presented with such a rule, avoid playing this variant of blackjack.

Split Anytime – Splitting is allowed after hitting. For example you were dealt 10, 2 and hit another 2. You can then split the deuces.

Split any 16 – Fantastic rule that allows you to get rid of the worst hand in blackjack in any variation it appears in such as 10 and 6, Ace and 5 and 9 and 7.

No Splits on 4, 5 or Ten – UK casino rule.

Discard Split Hand – A rare but very useful rule that permits you the discard one of the split hands.
